Executive Director

The Aspen Institute Kyiv (AIK) is looking to recruit the Executive Director. This is a substantial and challenging role with full responsibility for operations of the AIK.                                         


The Aspen Institute Kyiv plans to further expand its activities and play a more active role in promoting value based leadership and dialogue in Ukraine and in the region. The Aspen Institute Kyiv is looking to recruit the Executive Director to lead and implement this ambition. The post holder will be a key influencer in shaping the role of Aspen Institute Kyiv in Ukraine and the region. The Executive Director will be responsible for the successful leadership and management of the organization according to the strategic direction set by the Board of Trustee of the Aspen Institute Kyiv in accordance with principles and standards of the Aspen Institute USA.

The Aspen Institute Kyiv is a non-partisan organization that promotes dialogue and understanding between Ukrainian leaders on key issues and that contributes to promotion of value-based leadership, establishment of dialogue culture and formulation of public policies. The Institute follows the model of Aspen Institute (USA) and global Aspen network adhering to dialogue method in addressing important issues and problems. The Aspen Institute Kyiv provides the opportunity for informal debate from many different perspectives on current challenges facing society and business.

The Aspen Institute Kyiv is a member of international network of partners of Aspen Institute USA present in Prague, Czech Republic; Paris, France; Berlin, Germany; Rome, Italy; Bucharest, Romania; Madrid, Spain; New Delhi, India; Tokyo, Japan; Mexico City, México. The AIK approved by the Aspen USA in November 2015 and officially started its operations in 2016.


Accountabilities & Responsibilities



  • Participate with the Board of Trustees in developing a vision and strategic plan to guide the organization

  • Identify, assess, and inform the Board of Trustees of internal and external issues that affect the organization

  • Act as a professional advisor to the Board of Trustees on all aspects of the organization's activities

  • Follow the founding principles of the Aspen Institute Kyiv

  • Provide support to the Board of Trustees

  • Foster effective team work between the Board and the Executive team of the organization

  • In addition to the Chairperson of the Board of Trustees, act as a spokesperson for the organization

  • Conduct official correspondence on behalf of the Board as appropriate and jointly with the Board when appropriate

  • Represent the organization at community activities to enhance the organization's community profile


Operational planning and management

  • Develop an operational plan which incorporates goals and objectives that work towards the strategic direction of the organization 

  • Ensure that the operation of the organization meets the expectations of the Board, members of AIK and Aspen Institute USA

  • Ensure the efficient and effective day-to-day operation of the organization

  • Draft policies for the approval of the Board and prepare procedures to implement the organizational policies; review existing policies on an annual basis and recommend changes to the Board as appropriate

  • Provide support to the Board by preparing meeting agenda and supporting materials


Program planning and management

  • Oversee the planning, implementation and evaluation of the organization's programs and activities

  • Ensure that the programs and activities conducted by the organization contribute to the organization's mission and reflect the priorities of the Board

  • Oversee the planning, implementation, execution and evaluation of special projects


Human resources planning and management

  • Determine staffing requirements for organizational management and program delivery

  • Establish a positive, healthy and safe work environment

  • Recruit, interview and select staff/active volunteers from Aspen alumni network that have the right technical and personal abilities to help further the organization's mission

  • Ensure that all staff receives an orientation to the organization and that appropriate training is provided

  • Coach and mentor staff as appropriate to improve performance


Financial planning, management and fund raising

  • Work with staff and the Board (Finance Committee) to prepare a comprehensive budget

  • Work with the Board to secure adequate funding for the operation of the organization

  • Research funding sources, develop fund raising plans and write funding proposals to increase the funds of the organization 

  • Participate in fundraising activities as appropriate

  • Approve expenditures within the authority delegated by the Board

  • Ensure that sound bookkeeping and accounting procedures are followed

  • Administer the funds of the organization according to the approved budget and monitor the monthly cash flow of the organization

  • Provide the Board with comprehensive, regular reports on the revenues and expenditure of the organization 


Community relations/advocacy

  • Communicate with the Board, members of AIK, Aspen USA and international partners to keep them informed of the activities and plans of the organization and to identify changes in the community served by the organization

  • Establish good working relationships and collaborative arrangements with community groups, civil society representatives, politicians, and other organizations to help achieve the goals of the organization

  • Actively engage with the Aspen community in Ukraine


Risk management

  • Identify and evaluate the risks to the organization's people (clients, staff, management, volunteers), property, finances, goodwill, and image and implement measures to control risks


Knowledge, Skills, Experience & Qualifications

Academic / Professional Qualifications

  • Relevant university degree in a related field



  • Not less than 5 years of progressive management experience in a non-profit / educational / voluntary /civil society sector organization / business organization


Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Knowledge of leadership and management principles as they relate to non-profit/ educational / voluntary organizations

  • Knowledge of current community challenges and opportunities relating to the mission of the organization

  • Knowledge of financial management

  • Knowledge of project management

  • Proficiency in the use of computers

  • Fluency in Ukrainian and English


The applicant must be a Ukrainian resident.

Working conditions

  • Executive Directors usually work in an office environment, but the mission of the organization may sometimes take them to non-standard workplaces.

  • Executive Director of AIK will have 4-6 international travels per year.

  • Executive Directors work a standard work week, but additionally will often work evening, weekends, and overtime hours to accommodate activities such as Board meetings and representing the organization at public events.
